Indonesia-based Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGEO) has launched a long-term digital transformation programme to improve operational performance and cost efficiency across its geothermal sites. The initiative, known as G-Bionic, builds on efforts that began in 2023 to integrate data analytics, digital twins, and automation across the company’s value chain.

The programme includes 52 digital initiatives spanning subsurface exploration, drilling, surface operations, and enterprise management. By embedding data intelligence into daily workflows, PGEO aims to reduce inefficiencies, optimise resource allocation, and enhance real-time decision-making across production activities.

According to Ahmad Yani, PGEO’s Director of Operations, digital technology has become essential to maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly changing global energy market. He added that the transformation focuses on strengthening productivity and sustainability while advancing the company’s clean energy agenda.

Since its implementation, G-Bionic has reduced drilling costs by up to 6%, improved production by 6%, and recovered 100,000 productive working hours through process optimisation. The integration of machine learning tools and digital twins has also minimised unplanned downtime and reduced lost production opportunities. These efficiencies translate into an estimated 5% to 7% uplift in net income.

PT Pertamina (Persero) Independent Commissioner Raden Adjeng Sondaryani described the initiative as an important step towards cultivating a data-driven, adaptive, and sustainable operational culture. PGEO’s President Director reaffirmed that G-Bionic plays a central role in achieving the company’s targets of 1.8 GW installed capacity by 2033 and 3 GW in the long term.
