Spanish technology firm Indra, in partnership with US-based aviation software company Synaptic Aviation Inc., is deploying an AI-powered digital system to monitor and optimise aircraft rotation at three of Spain's busiest airports — Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, and Palma de Mallorca — representing a significant advancement in large-scale airport ground operations management.
Indra Group reported that the three airports, managed by Aena, jointly handle over 150 million passengers annually across approximately 477 aircraft parking positions.
The solution analyses video streams captured by cameras installed near parking positions and boarding bridges in real time, automatically recording significant events related to aircraft location and apron activities, including GPU connection, chock placement, refuelling, and catering services.
Synaptic Aviation's software has already demonstrated its ability to improve the predictability of turnaround times and data accuracy, and reduce environmental impacts across airports and airlines worldwide.
The integrated solution can be deployed securely without the need for major changes to existing infrastructure, bringing immediate benefits to workflows and enabling airport teams to make faster decisions with reliable information, reducing delays, emissions, and costs.
Lidia Muñoz Pérez, director of ports and airports at Indra, said the video analytics solution developed by Synaptic Aviation and deployed by Indra would provide Aena with a powerful and innovative tool, enabling it to revolutionise airport management and transform the future of air transport.
Synaptic Aviation president Sal Salman said the AI model delivers class-leading accuracy with low latency, resulting in improved punctuality, greater visibility, and a higher degree of apron safety, adding that the partnership brings intelligent automation to the heart of airport operations in Spain.
